I came to the United States from Europe with a degree in software engineering, fluent in several human and machine languages, with my eye set on the IT capital of Silicon Valley. When I landed in New York City and quickly picked up a 35mm film camera to capture my curiosity in the high speed cultural capital. Approaching the medium from an engineering perspective, I methodically experimented with the interrelation of quantifiable variables like ISO, shutter speed, aperture, focal lengths and darkroom chemistry, working with available light to gain a solid technical footing. Soon I ventured out from the canyons of concrete and glass and into the evergreen mountains with a medium format camera, where my comparatively slow moving subject—the landscape—instructed the discipline of camera placement, and fostered my passion for mountaineering. With a firm grasp on a new visual language, I searched again for a new horizon, following the sun farther west.
